Queen's Scholar - Charles Spence Angus & James Aitken

In 1885, Governor Cecil Clementi Smith introduced the first Higher Scholarships for boys in the Straits Settlements. The inaugural Higher Scholarship examinations were held in 1885 but no one passed, although RI’s Charles Spence Angus emerged top. These examinations were heavily criticised for their unrealistic expectations, and it was decided that the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate should set the examinations for 1886.

In that examination, four Rafflesians obtained top scores. The two best candidates, Song Ong Siang (1871–1941) and J. A. Remedios were disqualified, Song on account of being under-aged, and Remedios because he was not a British subject. The first scholarships were thus awarded to Charles Spence Angus and James Aitken. Song topped the examinations again in 1887, and then in 1888, before he was allowed to take up the Scholarship, having by then attained the age of 18.

Charles Angus and James Aitken who went on to study Engineering and Law respectively. Angus would later return to join the Perak Government, while Aitken would go on to set up a law firm with Song Ong Siang, a Queen’s Scholar in 1888.

Tesis Penerbitan Semenanjung Malaysia 1996

Perbincangan mengenai penerbitan di Semenanjung menjadi tajuk satu kajian oleh Stirling University. Kajian bertajuk "A study of book marketing in publishing houses in Peninsular Malaysia: contexts, practices, problems" oleh Azizah Hamzah. Kajian tersebut menghasilkan tesis di Stirling University pada 1996.

Kandungan:

Buku Astronaut Syria Muhammed Faris

Ketika menyinggah sebuah sebuah kedai buku di MK terjumpa sebuah buku yang mengesah mengenai astronaut berasal Syria. Astronaut Muhammed Faris (b.1951) melalui jalan hidup yang mencabar dan dicerita melalui judul buku "down to earth: from astronaut to refugee". Harga buku agak mahal iaitu Rm140 berbanding harga asal GBP15.

Faris menjadi hero negara apabila berjaya menjadi astronaut pada 1987. Beliau berlepas ke angkasa bersama krew Soviet Mir Space Station. Beliau berada di angkasa lepas selam seminggu menjalankan pelbagai eksperimen dan juga mengambil foto-foto Syria dari angkasa. Namun kini hidup dalam buangan di Turki dan memperjuang hidup bersama para pelarian Syria yang berada di Turki. Pada awal period krisis Syria Faris berpaling tadah bersama tentera yang bangun menentang Presiden Hafiz Assad.

Women Astronomer (2)

Pada awal kebangkitan astronomi universiti dan kolej di negara Barat masih belum membenar wanita masuk belajar. Maka wanita yang mencebur dalam bidang astronomi hanya bekerja sebagai penghitung atau dipanggil women computers. Namun apabila peraturan tersebut bertukar maka beberapa astronomer yang merupakan graduan wanita mula muncul. Antaranya adalah;

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979) was the first Harvard astronomy Ph. D. Her thesis laid all of the theoretical groundwork to assign physical temperatures to stars based on their spectral lines.
