Penciptaan Pintu Elektronik George Devol

Selain terkenal dengan penciptaan robotic arm George Devol juga telah menghasilkan beberapa penciptaan lain lebih awal. Salah satunya adalah pintu elekterik. George Devol telah menjual hakcipta penghasilan pintu elektrik kepada syarikat The Yale & Towne. Yale kemudiannya menghasilkan produk pintu elektrik dengan jenama Phantom Doorman sekitar tahun 1939-40.

Pencipta Robotic Arm - George Devol (d.2011)

Salah satu inovasi yang menyumbang besar kepada teknologi adalah penciptaan robotic arm. Penciptaan tersebut dihasilkan oleh George Devol dari Amerika Syarikat pada sekitar 1954. Bagi penghasilan produk robotir arm pertama bernama Unimate adalah pada 1961. Penghasilan tersebut adalah bersama gandingan Devol dan rakan usahan beliau Engelbert. Devol meninggal dunia ketika usia 99 tahun pada Ogos 2011.

Namun begitu gelaran The father of robotics adalah kepada Joseph Engelberger. Beliau merupakan kenalan Devol.

Asal Usul Perkataan Robot

Perkataan robot berasal dari bahasa Czech. Nama robot mula diguna pada 1921. Ia diperkenal melalui sebuah teater science fiction arahan seorang bangsa Czech bernama Karel Pacek. Teater tersebut dipentaskan di New York.

Sedikit Mengenai Munsyi Abdullah

Kenapa menulis mengenai MA? Cetusan dari pembacaan buku Farish Noor yang mengandungi beberapa artikel tentang MA. Artikel tersebut membincang kontroversi MA yang dimulai dengan kekaguman beliau terhadap British. MA dalam sejarah hidupnya menyaksikan Captain Farquhar meletupkan dynamite bertujuan utntuk meruntuh binaan kota Melaka. Usaha pemusnahan kota tersebut dimula oleh Farquhar pada 1804. Ternyata usaha tersebut menemui jalan sukar dan membawa kepada ikhtiar meletup dengan peledak pada 1807.

MA lahir di Kpg Tekek Melaka pada 1796, iaitu sekitar sepuluh sepuluh tahun selepas Francis Light tiba di Pulau Pinang 1786. MA pernah berkhidmat di bawah Stamford Raffles bermula pada 1810. MA kemudiannya berpindah ke Singapura mengikut Raffles pada 1819. MA meninggal dunia di Jeddah ketika beliau dalam perjalanan menunai fardu haji pada 1854. Pada 1821 bila mana Siam menyerang Kedah  seorang pembesar Kedah melarikan diri ke Melaka. Beliau diberi perlindungan oleh British. [Mungkinkah belia Ahmad Tajuddin Syah? - sejarah kedah - link].

Pada era MA berlaku juga beberapa pergolakan di Sumatera dan Indonesia. Dua  pergolakan yang besar adalah Perang Padri Minangkabau 1821-1832 dan rusuhan Pengiran Diponogoro di Jawa 1825-1830.

The Chinese have been entering Southeast Asia since the early years of the fifteenth century. By 1941, in Malay alone, there were about 2,580,000 Chinese, outnumbering the natives. The detailed history of this movement into Malaya has been written by Victor Purcell, who delineates the story of the beginnings of contacts and carries it through to July 1947. Mr Purcell is highly qualified to engage with this study. He was a member of Malayan Civil Service from 1921 to 1946. During these years, he served as the protector of Chinese, assistance director of Chinese Education, director-general of information, and, after the liberation of Malaya from the Japanese, he was appointed principal adviser to Chinese affairs to the British Military Administration.

Geomatics Purdue University

 

Purdue University mempunyai grup geomatik di bawah jabatan civil engineering. Unit Geomatik Purdue kecil sahaja di anggotai empat staf akademik. Yang paling tokoh adalah professor Ayman Habib yang dulunya pernah berkhidmat di Calgary dan juga OSU. Bidang kepakaran beliau adalah fotogrammetri. Selain Ayman Geomatik Purdue turut ada seorang akademik berasal Wuhan dan seorang berasal dari Seoul National Uni. Bidang mereka adalah satellite-based mapping dan image analysis.

Geodesi Satelit dan Ocean Tidal Loading

Salah satu kajian dalam geodesi adalah mengesan pergerakan permukaan bumi mengguna teknologi satelit. Ada banyak perkara yang diambil kira dalam memastikan hasil kerja pada tahap kejituan yang memuaskan. Salah satu hal yang menjadi cabaran adalah mengenal pasti kesan ocean tidal loading kepada model pergerakan.

Dalam hal yang sama dapatan kesan ocean tidal loading dari satelit geodesi boleh pula diguna pakai untuk tujuan geofizikal. Satu contohnya adalah guna pakai dalam kajian tentang kerak bumi. Hal sebegini bolehlah dikaitkan seolah-olah sebagaimana masalah telur dan ayam mana yang datang dulu?

Volkanologi dan Geodesi Satelit

Pemakaian teknik geodesi dalam mengkaji volkano telah bermula sejak penghujung kurun ke19. Usaha geodesi volkanologi menjadi lebih giat dengan adanya teknologi geodesi satelit yang mula mencapai kemuncaknya pada 1980an. Antara aktiviti yang menjadi perhatian adalah volkanologi di Amerika seiring dengan teknologi satelit GPS yang dibangun di sana.

University of East London merupakan institusi tertua di UK yang menawar program ijazah ukur tanah. Dulunya ia dikenali dengan nama North East London Polytechnic. Ramai profesional juruukur tanah Malaysia dan juga para akademik yang merupakan graduan NELP. Paling awal lulusan diploma ukur menyambung pengajian ke sana adalah sekitar tahun 1972 atau 1973. Antara mereka ialah Dato' NH dan kumpulan pensyarah utm MZD, TBTM, MSML, MS, MISM dan ramai lagi.

This work is part of the studies conducted by CERN as part of a project for a future electron-positron linear collider (CLIC) of 50 km. In particular, it addresses a specific aspect related to its pre-alignment in the vertical dimension. In fact, in order to ensure a high collision probability of incident particles (called luminosity), it is necessary that the diameter of the beams, at the collision point after 25 km of continuous acceleration, do not exceed a few nanometers. This is only possible if some technical constraints are fulfilled. One of them concerns the accuracy for the pre-alignment of quadrupoles along the whole machine. This alignment must be related to a straight line in Euclidean space with a precision of 10 microns over 200 meters sliding window. In practice, this can only be envisaged if a positioning system is capable to determine positions at this level of accuracy. In vertical, hydrostatic levelling systems (HLS) benefit of several advantages and represent serious candidates. In addition to their sub-micrometric resolution, HLS are robust and appear to be particularly reliable with respect to radiations. However, they are unable to realize a Euclidean straight line. Indeed, they are related to the surface of the fluid in hydrostatic equilibrium, connecting the different sensors, whose geometry is an equipotential of the Earth’s gravity field.

As we know, after the fall of Rome Justinian closed Plato’s Academy and the Lyceum of Aristotle in AD 520. The majority of the most important texts of Greek philosophy therefore became unavailable.

Menarik juga untuk bertanya apakah Lyceum of Aristotle? Jawapannya – Lyceum of Aristotle ialah lapangan terbuka tempat Aristotle mengajar. Plato’s Academy kita sudah boleh mengagak ianya ruang bangunan di mana Plato memberi kuliah. Pada zaman mereka kampus universiti belum wujud maka tempat untuk mengajar dan belajar ialah Academy dan Lyceum.

Tesis Application of Optical Techniques to Surveying (1991)

 

Antara kerja penyelidikan terawal berkait ukur berkepatan tinggi kegunaan kejuruteraan adalah oleh TA Clarke dari City Uni. Beliau menyiapkan tesis pada 1991 bertajuk "Application of optical techniques to surveying". Kajian beliau dikemuka kepada Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering. Senarai dalam acknowledgment tidak pula menyerta nama MAR Cooper.

Idea dan teknologi yang dibangun oleh TA Clarke pastinya untuk memperbaiki gap dalam teknologi ukur kejuruteraan pada sekitar penghujung 1980-an iaitu period 1988 dan selepasnya.

Perpustakaan Awam adalah fasiliti yang yang disediakan oleh perbadanan perpustakaan setempat seperti kerajaan negeri dan majlis tempatan. Koleksi buku yang tersimpan di perpustakaan awam adalah berfokus untuk pembacaan umum. Maka majoriti buku yang ada adalah untuk pembaca dari kalangan orang awam.

The History of Computer in Celestial Mechanics (Thesis 2011)

Pemakaian komputer dalam bidang geomatik adalah satu yang sangat perlu. Pemakaian komputer amat relevan kerana geomatik melibatkan banyak kerja hitungan. Sebut sahaja apa bidang pun dalam geomatik – astronomi, geodesi, pelarasan spatial dan sebagainya pasti ada hitungan yang terlibat.

Berikut adalah satu contoh pemakaian komputer dalam bidang astronomi yang melibatkan celestial mechanic.

Satu tesis phd dalam sejarah bertajuk “Just a beginning: computers and celestial mechanics in the work of Wallace J Eckert” selesai pada 2011 lalu. Tesis oleh Allan Olley dikemuka ke Institute for History and Philosophy of Science, University of Toronto.

This thesis details and analyzes the interaction between computers and science in a particular case. The case is the career of Wallace J. Eckert (1902-1971). Eckert was a professor of astronomy at Columbia University and scientific researcher for IBM. He has received some attention in the history of computing for his significant work in machine computation in the 1930s and 1940s and was the foremost expert on lunar theory for much of his life.
