Buku "The impact of Chinese secret societies in Malaya" ditulis oleh Wilfred Blythe. Buku terbitan OUP tahun 1969. mencerita tentang sejarah triad atau kongsi gelap Cina. Mereka inilah yang mencetus pergaduhan dan membawa kepada Perang Larut.

W. Blythe.63 covered the triads’ history in Malaya from the late 18th to early 20th century. The most important part of this was the information on the existence of the triads’ riots in the Straits Settlements long before the British involvement in the Malay states. The series of triad riots are as follows; 1854 riots in Singapore and 1857 riots in Penang, which the author argued were swiftly curtailed by the British government. This contrasted with the conflict in the Malay States in which triad wars seemed difficult to suppress. It is interesting to note that as explained by the author, the British Straits Settlement government set up a riot committee to overcome the riots hence showing the seriousness of the British to combat the problem particularly in places where they had the greatest interest i.e., the Straits Settlements. Apart from providing an in-depth understanding of triad activities which led to the chaos and unrests in the region, the work also dealt with British perceptions of the Malay rulers such as those held by W. H. M. Read and Seymour Clarke who commented on the latter’s incompetence in dealing with the triad’s involvement in the Larut Wars.
