Australia has started using the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA) since Jan 1, 2000. The topics were discussed quite extensively even way back six years before it was implemented. One major impact when adopting geocentric datum is the problem of coordinate transformation from the old/existing coordinates system. Read the following papers to get ideas and to understand about GDA.
Manning, J & Harvey, WM (1994) Status of GDA. AS, 39(1):28-33
Steed, J (1995) The Geocentric Datum of Australia. Surveying World, 4(1):14-17
WEF (1994) An explanation of the GDA and its effects upon future mapping. Cartography, 23(2):1-12 & 24(1):43-44
WEF (1996) An revised explanation of the GDA and its effects upon future mapping. AS, 41(2):121-130
In the case of GDA the transformation was discussed with emphasis on the difference between conformal approach (which were commonly used in practice) against transformation using projective approach. Read the following paper which discuss about the prospect of both transformation approaches.
WEF (1997) A comparison of existing coordinate transformation models and parameters in Australia. Trans Tasman Surveyor, 1(2):25-34.
