Persoalan mengenai permasalahan ekonomi period selepas merdeka menjadi topik yang kerap disuarakan. Kemunduran ekonomi anak bangsa telah mencetus idea diada kongres ekonomi bumiputera pertama (KEB) pada 1965. Penganjuran KEB bersebab dari tekanan kepada kerajaan oleh golongan peniaga Melayu. Ada sebuah buku yang boleh dirujuk bagi mengetahui latar belakang hal tersebut.
Buku 'Ethnicity and the economy, the State, Chinese business, and multinationals in Malaysia'ditulis oleh James V Jesudason. Buku terbitan OUP S'pore tahun 1990. [Jesudason sit for HSC in 1973; BA Econ Wesleyan Uni 1978, MA Sociology Harvard 1982, PhD Harvard 1987].
James V Jesudason has a PhD in Sociology from Harvard University and has written broadly on Malaysian politics and economics. He is currently Teaching Professor at the Colorado School of Mines, having previously taught at the National University of Singapore.
