Buku "Analysis & Adjustment of Survey Measurements"

Bagi pelajar geomatik yang mengikuti subjek Pelarasan Data Spatial (Least squaes adjustment) ada beberapa buku yang selalunya disyor sebagai rujukan. Salah satunya ialah Analysis & Adjustment of Survey Measurements (AASM). Buku ini ditulis bersama oleh Edward M Mikhail dan Gordon Gracie. Mikhail merupakan professor fotogrammetri di Purdue Univesity manakala Gracie profesor surveying science di Erindale College U of Toronto. Buku AASM adalah terbitan agak lama iaitu tahun 1981 namun kandungan dan cara penyampaiannya amat baik untuk memahami tentang least squares adjustment. Buku ini tidak ada dalam koleksi PSZ dan sesiapa yang beminat perlu mencari dari librari staf secara peribadi. Saya baru saja dapat satu copy buku ini setelah mengikuti kuliah LSA yang disampaikan oleh Dr Dudy tempoh hari.

Mesyuarat Kumpulan Kerja Geodetik - KKG Jupem

Pada setiap tahun penghujung Februari Bahagian Ukur Geodeik (BUG) Jupem mengadakan mesyuarat KKG. Pada tahun ini mesyuarat diadakan pada Khamis 25 Feb. Panggilan mesyuarat kali ini dikeluarkan awal iaitu tiga minggu sebelum. Ahli mesyuarat agak ramai lebih 30 wakil dari berbagai agensi - Jupem, UTM, Uitm, JMG, JMM dan Jabatan Tanah dan Survei Sabah & Sarawak. Antara agendanya ialah pembentangan laporan aktiviti enam kumpulan kerja - Project Team 1 - 6.
Pada tahun ini nampaknya hanya Team 2 dan 5 sahaja yang menyediakan laporan bertulis yang dikemukakan kepada urusetia sebelum tarikh mesyuarat sebenar.

Lecture Week 2 - Deformation Svy

Lecture in week 2 for deformation survey concentrated on least squares adjustment implemented using two epoch of survey data. An assignment was given earlier in week one for students to work using what ever available adjustment package. Starnet seems to be the only one available. The lecture for this week also discussed about the field work which is suppose to be carried out at Padang Kawad. Due date for survey data submission is set on April 8 (after mid-semester break).

Gauss, Carl Friedrich (1777-1855)

Bila membaca dan belajar mengenai least squares adjustment nama Gauss ini pasti disebut-sebut. Beliau merupakan ahli matematik dan tokoh awal yang memperkenal teknik least squares adjustment. Gauss telah mengguna pakai teknik LSA untuk hitungan dalam permasalahan astronomi.

Bagi sesiapa yang ingin membaca biografi Gauss ada dua buah buku mengenai beliau tersimpan di PSZ. Satu yang menarik mengenai Gauss ialah beliau amat rapat dengan pemerintah tempat kelahiran beliau di Jerman- Duke of Brunswick. Duke of Brunswick juga telah membiaya Gauss semasa belajar hinggalah memperolehi PhD dan seterusnya sepanjang karier beliau di universiti.

PSM II First Lecture

The first lecture FYPII for this semester was held this morning. The meeting is mainly to  remind students to keep track with their thesis project. Two important dates were announced - the date for technical paper submission (May 18) and thesis presentation (May 30). Ten students were absent.
In the afternoon one postgraduate student came to discuss about a paper to be submitted for publication. I was able to edit the earlier chapters while the results and conclusion not done yet.

Lecture Week 1 - Deformation Survey

The first two lectures on deformation survey in Week One of this semester were given at BK1. In the first lecture only ten students turned up while in the second fifteen students were there. The lectures cover basic introduction and highlighted the common tasks encountered in analyzing the deformation by geodetic method. Emphasis were given on the error of survey measurement and the important role of monitoring network particularly the datum point stability analysis.

Singkatan dr rer nat

Bila membaca cv para akademik akan ditemui berbagai gelaran dan singkatan pencapaian akademik. Salah satunya ialah PhD - dr rer nat. Sebagai contoh Prof Poerbondono (Pak Poerbo) dari Geodesi ITB menulis lulusan akademiknya sebagai dr rer nat. Singkatan tersebut bermakna Doctor in Natural Science. Singkatan ini diambil dari ijazah Jerman - Doktor der Naturwissenschaften (Dr. rer. nat.).
Salah satu universiti Jerman yang ramai graduan dr rer nat ini ialah Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel khususnya dari Institut für Geowissenschaften, Abteilung Geophysik. Beberapa tesis PhD Geodesi telah dihasilkan di sini dibawah Fakulti Matematik dan Natural Sains (der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät). Pak Poerbo ialah graduan dr rer nat, Kiel tahun 2003.

Sebuah lagi tesis geodesi dr rer nat dari Kiel ialah "Processing and interpretation of satellite and ground based gravity data at different lithospheric scales" pada 2013. Tesis ini mengguna pakai data Grace, Goce dan EGM2008 (source).

Majlis walimah anak staf

Pada hari ini berpeluang hadir majlis walimah anak Encik Ghazali Khalid - staf Pejabat Siswazah (Blok T06). Majlis berlangsung di Rumah Alumni  dan kebetulan jatuh pada hari Cuti Tahun Baru Cina. Di majlis tersebut dapat duduk semeja dengan dua rakan bekas staf Fakulti Ukur. Mereka adalah Encik Munzani dulu bertugas di Makmal UKK dan kini di Pejabat PTG Kota Bharu. Seorang lagi ialah Encik Nasir dulunya bertugas di Makmal Fotogrammetri UTM KL.

Lecture on Minque VCE

A sharing session on Minque Vce was held today among G&G members. Minque (Minimum Norm Quadratic Estimation) is a method been employed in geodetic adjustment for the purpose of variance component estimation (VCE).

Journal of Geodetic Society of Japan is been published by The Geodetic Society of Japan. It is accessible online and the latest issue available is Volume 60 - 2014. Four issues are published annually.

MoreFix Routine

A least squares computational routine for the purpose of precise levelling adjustment was successfully developed. The routine named as MoreFix written in Fortran was the result of many years of research effort done without any funding received. The routine was tested using precise levelling data from several places locally as well as foreign. It was used among others for the adjustment of levelling network of UAE and Oman. The most challenging task was for Oman with network consist slightly more than three thousand BMs were computed.

The most recent updating of MoreFix has been worked out and it  include the new scheme of observation weighting, scaling the residual to accommodate realistic global test and re-scaling it back to compute standard error.

This latest work improvements were done in conjunction with special lectures on least squares adjustment given to graduate students today.

LSE Lecture Series

A lecture series on least squares adjustment was organized by G&G research group for the first time ever. The lecture series cover a number of topics range from basic principle of LSA up to slightly higher topic such as Minque approach of weighting scheme. The lectures were held from 1 Feb for four consecutive days.  The first three days lectures were given by Dr Dudy.
