Surveying at Uni Melbourne

Surveying program at The University of Melbourne was at one time famous. Many big names like Ian Williamson, Clive Fraser and Frank Leahy were re-known figures teaching surveying there. Then the program was re-named as Geomatics. Now all of them already retired and the Surveying program was re-organized as Geomatics under Department of Infrastructure Engineering, Melbourne School of Engineering, The University of Melbourne.

The undergraduate programs offered is no longer BSc Surveying or BSc Geomatic but change to Bachelor of Design (Spatial Systems Major) and Bachelor of Science (Spatial Systems Major). Among the geodesy lecturers still there are Allison Kealy, Philip Collier and Cliff Ogleby. The IE Dept is head by Prof Abbas Rajabifard.

The website of IE can be accessed - here.

Nerem (1995) & IAG 119 (1998)

In the course of reading WEF (2010) two interesting references as follows were came across and downloaded;

Nerem RS, C Jekeli & WM Kaula (1995) "Gravity field determination and characteristics: retrospective and prospective". Paper was published in Journal of Geophysical Research 100(B8):15053-15074.

Geodesy on the Move, IAG Symp 119 edited by Forsberg, M Feissel and R Dietrich.

Both publications were not available at PSZ and thankful to uq for helping.

WEF 2010 - two important suggestions

WEF presented a paper entitled "Satellite and airborne gravimetry: their role in geoid determination and some suggestions". The paper deals among others on the effort of incorporating the data from these two platforms for geoid computation particularly for Australia.

There are two suggestions put forward by him -first  the requirement of collecting airborne gravimetry data over coastal and estuarine zones and second to have airborne gravity exercise covering Antartica.

Geodetic BVP - some notes

The following notes on GBVP are extracted from reading of WEF 2010 - "Satellite and airborne gravimetry";

Stokes (1849) first showed how to solve a free bvp in potential theory to compute the geoid from gravity anomalies ... [ why we call it free bvp? … what are other types of bvp? ]

Hotine (1968) described other adaptation as a solution of a fixed boundary-value problem. The solution is in the form of Hotine’s integral for the determination of the geoid from gravity disturbances.

The approaches of bvp have seen been extended to the computation of the geoid from airborne gravimetry and airborne gradiometry as discussed by Schwarz (1996) and Schwarz and Li 1996. The former appeared in lecture notes of Como IAG Summer School while the latter (what can airborne contribute to geoid determination?) appeared in JGR Solid Earth.

Before IGFS it was IGGC

International Gravity Field Service (IGFS) event is held once in four years. The 1st in 2006 and followed subsequently in 2010 and 2014. The next up-coming one should be in 2018. Prior to IGFS the similar meeting was known as IGGC meeting organized by International Gravity and Geoid Commission (IGGC). There were three IGGC symposiums - the 1st in Graz (1994), the 2nd in Trieste Italy (1998) and the 3rd in Thessaloniki (2002).

The proceedings of the 1st was published by Springer. The 2nd published as journal and the 3rd was published by University of Thessaloniki.

Among the papers available from Trieste meeting is "study of the gravity field spectrum in Canada in view of cm-geoid determination" by Kotsakis & Sideris (source).

Turkey Geoid Models

In Turkey the task of computing its national geoid is under the purview of Geodesy Department, a division under the General Command of Mapping. They have put up efforts publishing a number of geoid since mid-70's. The first Turkey geoid was determined in 1976 (Turkey Geoid 1976). It was determined using astrogeodetic method. Then in 1991 they came up with Turkish Geoid 1991 (TG-91) computed using LSC of the remove-restore method. In 1994 another new geoid was computed - Turkish Astrogeodetic Geoid 1994 (TAG-94). Another geoid computation up-dating effort was done in 1999 with the creation of updated Turkish Geoid (TG-99A). TG-99A  was computed also by LSC approach. All publications describing about Turkey Geoid 1976, TG-91, TAG-94 and TG-99A were written in Tukish.

The most recent geoid of Turkey is Turkish Geoid 2009 (TG-09). It was also computed using LSC approach of remove-restore procedure. In addition to TG-09 a Turkish Hybrid Geoid Model 2009 (THG-09) was also created. THG-09 was computed using FFT technique using EGM08, DNSC08 sea gravity anomalies as well as terrestrial gravity data. The work on THG-09 was published in Studia Geophys Geodaetica (Kilicoglu et. al, 2011).

Physical Geodesy Research at Czech

Research works in physical geodesy in Czech Republic are still gaining momentum. This is expected as there are a number of well known geodesist are of Czech origin who are still actively contributing their works. Among them are Milos Pick, Petr Holota and Pavel Novak.

Below are some of the PhD research topics in physical geodesy offered for year 2016-17 at University of West Bohemia (CZU) as shown at their website;

Application of potential theory for determination of the Earth's gravity field.
Comptation of precise local gravity field model for height transformation in the Czech Republic.
Determination of temporal variations of the Earth's gravity field from available local gravity data or global geopotential models.
Forward modelling in geodesy.
Gravity field field mapping through combination of heterogenous gravity field data.
Parameterization of the Earth's gravity field through combination of heterogenous gravimetric and gradiometric data.
Variational methods for solving problems of potential theory in physical geodesy.
